Ryoji Ikeda
Ryoji Ikeda's supercodex [live set] closed the data-driven trilogy that began with datamatics and test pattern. In performance, raw data and mathematical models are used to generate sound and projection together: dense fields of black-and-white pattern, numeric arrays and strobing bars move at the limit of perception while the sound cuts between sine tones, clicks and sub-bass at extreme dynamic range. Nothing is illustrated; the image is the data made visible and the sound is the same data made audible.
At Day for Night 2017 the work was presented as a live set, listed on the festival's lineup poster and the surviving 2017 tracker at the head of the visual programme. Ikeda's own project record documents the piece; the archive holds no photograph or recording of the Houston performance and shows none.
