In the aftermath of Free Press Houston’s traumatic collapse, much of the archive from 15+ years of writing and artwork was lost in the melee. All of that lost writing, artwork, and ephemera represented thousands of hours of work by extraordinarily talented people. I have only just now mustered enough patience and distance to try to collect and collate as much of it as I can from a dozen different sources.
The treachery of AI has now made this possible in much faster ways, thankfully, but going through all of this has also reminded me just how much work we actually did. The newspaper, the festivals, and especially Day for Night were all much bigger undertakings than I think I fully understood at the time. It has also reminded me how talented so many people in our community were, and how quickly we managed to build a real cultural infrastructure around all of it. Looking back through the work now, the scale of it is honestly a little overwhelming. It was important to preserve this work either way because so many people contributed so much over so many years. Despite my mistakes and all of my regrets, I still cherish so much of the good work that was done by myself and so many others. For all the controversy that surrounded Free Press Houston and the festivals, I remain extraordinarily proud of the body of work we created. I’m especially honored that people still reach out to me from all over the country about Day for Night, and that it continues to mean something to people all these years later. I guess it’s natural to want to focus on your best moments as opposed to your worst, and I’m glad I can try and give that a whirl now.
Recent days have been blessed despite all of the turmoil in the world. My family is happy and healthy. Andrea and I just reached 25 years of marriage today. The kids are grown and out of the house. Life is strange for sure but I think I have had my fill of looking back after compiling all of this. There should be some mischief in the future.
I will keep adding to this archive as I can, and I am happy to take suggestions, corrections, missing work, old issues, artwork, photographs, or anything else that ought to be here.
And to anyone I owe a sorry to, I offer it freely and sincerely, and I mean it. And if you did me dirty, I offer my forgiveness just as freely.
Material is recovered from printed originals, press proofs held as PDFs, email attachments retained by the paper, and surviving pages of freepresshouston.com. Each recovered object is logged as a source record with its type, retrieval date and confidence before any page is published.
Original files are kept unmodified as the source of truth. Web-facing images and page views are derived from them; the original scan or proof remains downloadable from its issue.
Article text is transcribed from the printed page. Where transcription has not been done, the record says so rather than presenting partial or machine-guessed text as the article.
When the same article survives in more than one form — a print proof and a web version, for example — the archive reconciles them into one canonical record with several source records. The printed version governs the text and date unless the evidence says otherwise. Duplicate pages are not created.
Every record carries a provenance state and a confidence level: confirmed, probable or unverified. These are recorded in the data and shown quietly on the page. Issue numbers, volumes, dates and page counts are entered only when visible on the object itself.
Original publication dates are preserved. A date of digitisation or migration is never presented as a publication date.
Records are revised as better sources appear. A correction updates the record in place and its source list; URLs stay stable so citations do not break.
