James Clar
The New Sublime was James Clar's installation for Day for Night 2017. A kinetic physical sculpture, an arrangement of reflective forms, liquid and light in motion, was recorded continuously by a camera and its image projected at architectural scale on the building around it. The media on the wall was therefore generated in real time by a physical object rather than by software: the sculpture was the source, the projection its enlargement, and the two could be seen together.
The title sets the work against the Romantic sublime of landscape, proposing that the overwhelming scale once found in nature is now produced by media. The work is documented here through NYLON's coverage of the edition and the surviving curatorial record; the archive holds no photograph of the installation.
