Volume

Volume was the installation the Paris studio NONOTAK, the illustrator Noemi Schipfer and the architect-musician Takami Nakamoto, built for the first Day for Night at Silver Street Studios on December 19–20, 2015. The Houston Chronicle's review of the weekend named it among the installations that dazzled, and Live Design covered it as the festival's entrance piece: scaffold blocks carrying a large field of LED and strobe fixtures inside an otherwise bare warehouse, run to a synchronised sound score so that the structure seemed to appear, dissolve and reappear in the dark. Houstonia's reviewer described stepping into a massive light exhibit NONOTAK had assembled inside an empty warehouse.

VICE documented the studio's approach to the commission, and Day for Night's own crew filmed the pair for the festival's Artist Series, embedded here from the festival's channel. The archive holds no photograph of the Houston installation and shows none. NONOTAK returned the following year with Highline and SHIRO.
