The Hates are among Houston’s earliest punk bands. In a 2017 Houstonian Tales interview, Free Press Houston dated their start as The Hates to a 1979 Rock Against Racism show at the University of Houston and described them as pioneers who helped build a local scene and bring touring bands to the city. Led for decades by Christian Kidd, the band played rooms such as the Pik N Pak and The Axiom; drummer and music historian David Ensminger also appears in the paper’s coverage. The archive holds their Free Press Summer Fest appearance in 2011, and the paper repeatedly called them “Houston punk legends.”

One appearance documented on a Free Press Houston bill. Records are kept to the lineup sources the archive holds; nothing beyond them is stated.
“However, that’s what Christian of The Hates is for the Houston music scene.”
