Young Mammals is a Houston independent rock band associated with singer and guitarist Carlos Sanchez, bassist Jose Sanchez, guitarist Cley Miller, and drummer Justin Terrell. Its recordings combine melodic guitar pop with abrupt shifts in texture and rhythm, developed through a long collaboration with producer Steve Christensen. Carrots (2010), Alto Seco (2014), and Jaguar (2016) document successive stages of that approach. References to the Houston experimental group Culturcide in Jaguar’s artwork connect the band’s pop-oriented songwriting with the city’s older underground traditions, placing Young Mammals within a continuing local conversation about independent music.
