Ghostbeast

Ghostbeast was the site-specific installation the Icelandic, New York-based artist Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir, known as Shoplifter, made for Day for Night 2016 with the Endless Collective. NYLON, interviewing her days before the festival, described a 2,500-square-foot space taken over with projections, hidden fencing and hair, lots of it: real and synthetic hair material worked with structural elements and found objects, in the vein of the hair-based sculpture that had occupied her practice for two decades. Katrina Barber's photographs, published by Janky Smooth and displayed here from the publisher's own host, show the tangled white mass under coloured light with visitors moving inside it.

Houstonia's photo essay from the weekend noted that the work made a dramatic backdrop for photographs and captioned its interior as cloudy. Shoplifter told NYLON she wanted people to experience a new form of reality, and the piece worked on those terms: an environment to be entered and lost in rather than looked at.
