Damien Echols
Crimson Lotus was a room of neon glyphs and sigils made by Damien Echols for Day for Night 2016. Houstonia's photo essay placed it at the soothing end of the year's programme, described its forms as neon glyphs and sigils, and noted that it was highly photographed; Sara Strick's frame, published by Janky Smooth and displayed from the publisher's host, shows the red-lit interior. The symbols come from Echols's long practice of ceremonial magick, which he has written about since his release from prison in 2011.
Free Press Houston published an Artist Series piece on Echols in June 2017, held in this archive, which returns to the work and its maker after the festival.
