Grand Old Grizzly developed in Houston around the songwriting of Will Thomas, drawing on the musicians who had played together in Katie Stuckey’s band. What began as a proposed solo recording became a collaborative roots-rock group, with guitarist and producer Paul Beebe, bassist Mark Riddell, and drummer Chris Lewis among its members. The self-titled debut joined country inflections with melodic rock, including songs such as “Sundowners” and “Tallahassee.” Grand Old Grizzly’s formation illustrates the continuity between Houston’s singer-songwriter community and the working bands that carried its songs into clubs and recording studios.

One appearance documented on a Free Press Houston bill. Records are kept to the lineup sources the archive holds; nothing beyond them is stated.
“I think that makes you appreciate when a band like Houston’s Grand Old Grizzly actually plays country music.”
