Bombón began in Houston in 2010 as a dance party founded by Gracie Chávez and Alex Nava, also known as DJ Navó. Growing into a DJ collective and music group, it brought cumbia, tropical bass, other Latin dance traditions, and Houston rap into a shared repertoire, including the hybrid sound the collective calls screwmbia. Early gatherings at AvantGarden and Fox Hollow emphasized participation, with DJs, percussionists, and hosts close to the dance floor. The launch of Bombón Music in 2018 extended this local practice into an independent label and a network of international collaborations.
