New York City Queens emerged in 2011 from Kingwood, in the Houston area, around singer, guitarist, and recording engineer John Allen Stephens. With members including Daniela Hernandez, Kitty Beebe, Tom Guth, and Isaac Chavez Garza, the group developed melodic guitar pop that expanded toward electronic textures. Somewhere Different, Somewhere New preceded the full-band album Burn Out Like Roman Candles (2012). Free Press Summer Fest appearances and local performances connected its layered guitars and dance-oriented rhythms with Houston’s early-2010s independent scene, while Stephens’s recording work linked the band to the city’s wider community of musicians.
