Moji developed in Houston after vocalist Moji Abiola and drummer David Garcia began working together in late 2013, later joined by guitarist Troy Craegh. The group’s music brought rock songwriting into contact with blues and jazz improvisation, leaving room for the voice and instruments to respond to one another in performance. A 2015 appearance at Cactus Music documented the ensemble within Houston’s independent listening and record-store community. Moji’s early work reflects the city’s tradition of musicians moving across genre boundaries through small ensembles and collaborative live performance.
