Spain Colored Orange grew from Gilbert Alfaro’s Houston solo songwriting into an ensemble combining psychedelic pop, rock, and jazz instrumentation. By 2005, its lineup brought Alfaro’s vocals and keyboards together with Eric Jackson’s trumpet, Steven Burnett’s bass, James Diederich’s drums, Randy Platt’s guitar, and Justin Peak’s synthesizers and samples. The EP Hopelessly Incapable of Standing in the Way appeared that year through Lucid Records. Its layered arrangements connected familiar pop forms with brass and electronic color, placing Spain Colored Orange within Houston’s mid-2000s community of ambitious, collaboratively arranged independent music.
