Mic Skills is the performing name of Houston rapper Michael McNair, whose work combines independent hip-hop recording with event organizing. In 2006, he and Sxnxmoh established Mission Control at Helios, the Montrose venue later known as AvantGarden; the series subsequently occupied other local spaces, including Notsuoh. Mission Control gave emerging performers a recurring platform and helped connect audiences across Houston’s independent rap community. McNair’s own recordings, compilation appearances, and touring in the United States and Canada extended that activity beyond the city, linking an individual musical practice with the infrastructure that supported other artists.
