Free Press Houston
2010—2016

Travis Tobey came up through Sara Fitzgerald's original Fitzgerald's crew and served as the venue's bar manager, carrying that work forward into the Pegstar and Free Press Houston operating years of 2010 to 2016. He is one of the few people whose service spans both eras of the building, and that continuity mattered: he arrived with institutional knowledge of the room, its rhythms, its regulars and its quirks, at a point when the venue's programming and management were changing hands.

As bar manager he ran the operational centre of a working music venue — staffing, stock, service across two floors and the nightly logistics that decide whether a show runs smoothly or falls apart. Bar operations at Fitzgerald's were not a sideline to the music; they were the economics that let the music happen, and Tobey handled them with the reliability that made him a key member of the day-to-day crew rather than a name on a schedule.

Free Press Houston's own pages record him in the room: the paper named him as Travis Tobey of Fitzgerald's in its Best of Houston bar listing, and he competed among the city's prominent bartenders at the paper's Sammy Awards cocktail competition. This archive holds him as the continuity figure between the original Fitzgerald's era and the Pegstar / Free Press Houston operating period that ended with the venue's closure in 2016.
