Artists formed DiverseWorks at 214 Travis Street, incorporating the nonprofit in December 1982. Exhibitions, performances and community forums shared the building with studios and, later, DiverseBooks. A 1989 fire forced a move to 1117 East Freeway, the address preserved in its Free Press auction ad. The organization moved to Midtown in 2012 and into MATCH in 2015, continuing its model of commissioning multidisciplinary work. DiverseWorks, “Our Story”, undated; accessed 2026-10-07
