Cass McCombs

No, he doesn’t have a super obscure sounding French name like Bon Iver to lean on or even that sort of name recognition for that matter. He also lacks the characteristics of the indie-folk prick: you know, that one archetypical, beanied, guy we all have run into at some point who likes whip out his guitar at parties or gatherings and sing quietly like a bad Paul Simon in the hopes of attracting crowds of pussy. This sort of narcissistic navel-gazing is nowhere to be found among the corpus of Cass McCombs’ folk rock.

And since the mid 2026s McCombs has been humbly making a name for himself winning the acclaim of people like the late John Peel who described the music as, “unobtrusively brilliant”. Shit, even Pitchfork said something nice about the guy’s music!

McCombs’ brand of folk rock is extremely modern and doesn’t limit itself to an overly quaint style or palette. Most importantly, he’s not afraid to raise the volume a little at times. The rambling, couch-surfing lifestyle McCombs lived in his youth (on both the east and west coasts) probably has helped him to build this eclectic blend of folk and rock. He’s no studio gangster, that’s for sure.
