  "note": "Tyler Barber art-directed Free Press Houston from 2005 until the paper stopped printing in 2015 and moved to digital-only publication. His contribution was not simply to make the paper look nicer. He brought a modern, sleek and minimalist discipline to what had often been a maximalist pileup of Free Press Houston artwork, building a visual system capable of containing that energy: cleaner and more coherent pages, with hierarchy and legibility, without flattening the paper’s personality. Beyond the paper, Barber was a stalwart member of Houston’s music community and played in bands including The Colour Clear and Generic Tribe. This account of his full 2005—2015 art-direction span, the character of his design work, and his place in Houston’s music community and bands is publisher Omar Afra’s firsthand recollection supplied to this archive; it is presented as recollection rather than as a span independently established by every surviving issue.\n\nThe held record supports the work in specific surviving objects. Printed staff boxes name Barber under Layout Design in August 2010, March 2015 and October 2015, and as Art Director in November 2012, August 2013, July 2014 and August 2014. The archive also holds 29 recovered bylines under his name, led by video-game and technology criticism from E3 reporting and console reviews in 2007 through an E3 column in 2016. Omar recalls that Barber carried an unusually deep knowledge of video games, and that Free Press Houston drew directly on that expertise through the video-game column he authored — the surviving byline run is the held record of that expertise. Free Press Houston’s own September 2012 advertising page credits him with cover art; a recovered 2014 food article credits his illustration; and Fitzgerald’s August 2010 startup record names him for logo, web and branding work. Omar further recalls that Barber rebranded the Fitzgerald’s logo for the venue’s Free Press Houston / Pegstar operating era; the startup record independently holds him to logo, web and branding work for the venue, and the rebranding itself is presented as publisher recollection rather than independently documented.\n\nBarber married fellow Free Press Houston staffer Jody Worthington in a ceremony officiated by Omar Afra. Omar recalls that they now reside in Oakland, California; the marriage and present-day location are publisher-supplied firsthand recollections and are not presented as independently verified.",
